The Coach
Sheldon Marr started training in Judo in 1964 at age 5, under his father (well known Judo instructor) Wally Marr. By age 17, he was a Junior National Judo Champion, and a California State Wrestling Champion. But in a Wrestling practice in 1976, while throwing his opponent with Uchi Mata (a Judo throw), he hit his head… and broke his neck.
In 1980 (against doctor's orders) Sheldon returned to Judo competition, and soon picked up where he had left off. In 1982, he was selected to the U.S. Olympic Judo Training Squad, and moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center [OTC] in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Unfortunately, making the Olympic Team was not to be. In early 1984, Sheldon's neck injury of seven years earlier forced him to retire once more… this time, for good.
After leaving the OTC, Sheldon moved to the Denver area, and started coaching Varsity Wrestling at Cherry Creek High School (with long-time Cherry Creek Coach Steve Foster). Together (from 1986 to 1991), Marr and Foster made Cherry Creek Wrestling history by putting together the most successful string of seasons in the school's 50 year history. With 6 District/Regional Team Titles, 12 State Champions, and 40 State Medalists, they absolutely dominated the Colorado State Championships (placing 3rd in '86, 3rd in '87, 4th in '88, 2nd in '89, 2nd in '90, and 1st in '91). Some of the former "Bruins" even went on to become Collegiate All-Americans and NCAA Champions!
In 1992, Sheldon became the Denver Sheriff Department's Defensive Tactics Instructor, and in 1995 he opened The Grappler's Edge Academy. By way of his Martial Arts instructional articles, videos, and popular seminars, and with the success of the Grappler's Edge Team (15 Time U.S. National Team Champions), Sheldon has become one of America's most well known and respected Jiu Jitsu and Grappling (Submission Wrestling) Instructors.
Sheldon has been recognized as the "Instructor of the Year" by Jujitsu America, the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame, the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and the International Black Belt Hall of Fame; and was on the Coaching Staff for the 2000 U.S. World Pankration Team, and the 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 U.S. World Grappling Teams.
Sheldon has coached National Champions in Judo and Pankration, NCAA Champions in Wrestling, and his Grappler's Edge Team are the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 U.S. National Jiu Jitsu and/or Grappling (Submission Wrestling) Team Champions.
Marr credits his success in the Martial Arts (both in competition and in coaching) to having had great instructors himself, including Wally Marr, Professor Willy Cahill, Professor Wally Jay and Charlie Lee.
